Charles Street Jail/Liberty Hotel

Known for its history as a prison, the high-profile Liberty Hotel project required several Phoenix services. Services provided included the historic restoration of the Charles Street Jail, new masonry construction of the adjacent 18-story hotel, installation of air and vapor barrier and waterproofing. The project required exterior and interior cutting, pointing and cleaning of existing mortar joints, granite replacement and Dutchmen repairs. Phoenix also dismantled, documented and rebuilt the historic granite chimneys, and the interior historic masonry.

The project presented many logistical challenges. The site is centered between three fully functional major medical facilities including Mass Eye and Ear, Yawkey Center for Cancer Care and Mass General Hospital. The project required extensive neighborhood coordination and strict adherence to city protocol.
